Podcast Episode #31: Big City Getaways in the National Parks, ft. North Cascades and Channel Islands
Last weekend, we got away from the city. It was wonderful.
Even though St. Louis isn’t the biggest metropolis in the country, we often find the desire to get totally away. We drove down just two hours into the Ozark mountains, to the Ozark National Scenic Riverway, one of the NPS sites in Missouri that we haven’t explored much yet.
Almost instantly, we felt better. Less stuffy, less hectic, far fewer cars. More green.
It was a wonderful weekend hiking, mountain biking, and even touring an NPS-protected cave with a ranger. (See it on Instagram.) We had an overwhelming nostalgia for our time in the parks. Last year, we’d often pass through big cities, to refuel and access wifi, and even after just a few hours, we’d feel the pull again to get back into the mountains and the country. Many parks have easy access to the conveniences of urban life, but a few national parks rise above the rest in the opportunity they provide to get away from the city.
Listen to this week’s episode of the podcast to hear more about why North Cascades, near Seattle, and Channel Islands, near Los Angeles, are the perfect getaway parks.
