We are not National Parks experts. We may try to make it look like we are (when we spew off a bunch of stats about the NPS, and we pretend to be good at planning our trips), but we didn’t start this journey much further ahead than any average traveler. So we had no idea […]
Mesa Verde was one of the coolest surprises of our trip so far. We didn’t go into this huge trip with much more knowledge about the National Parks than the next guy, or than any of you for that matter. So Mesa Verde wasn’t high on our radar as far as National Parks excitement. But little did […]
Cole and I intended two main things for this year-long trip: (1) to have big adventure (2) without breaking the bank. If every trip goes as smoothly as our first stop at the Great Sand Dunes near Alamosa, Colorado, we will be just fine. We hiked, sand sledded, climbed dunes, souvenir shopped, had a nice […]
Well, we officially made it to ONE of 59 National Parks. Six days of traveling to and exploring Great Sand Dunes. 37 miles walked. 1100 miles driven. Zero showers. Until now! Right now, we are cozy and clean in a hotel right outside of Mesa Verde, the next park on our list. Rejuvenation is on […]
As our launching date approaches (6 days!!), it has become more and more important to look at what gear we have and what we still need to order on Amazon (with 2-day shipping) at the last minute. We are very close. We will be updating the Gear section of our site as we look at […]
As we prepare to take off for a year, we have been carefully considering the kind of ideas we want to stand for and promote to others. We will be sharing, sharing, sharing and we want our message to be clear. So what is our message, exactly? We believe firmly in a few things surrounding this trip, […]
If you’ve been reading our posts, you probably know a little about the two crazies that make up the Switchback Kids team. You know that we love to hike. You may know that we are going on a year-long tour of all 59 of the U.S.’s National Parks. And you may even know how we decided […]
In just a little over a month, Cole and I will be officially taking off on our journey of a lifetime. The journey will include biking, kayaking, photography, and climbing, but above all – hiking. We want to have the energy and stamina to pull 10-mile hiking days often enough to make the most of […]
Growing up in Missouri, float trips were a very regular part of my upbringing. It always amazed me when I met out-of-state college friends that some people don’t even know what float trips are. If you are one of those people, never fear, because this post has very little to do with float trips. Rafting, canoeing, or […]
As most of you know, a huge supporting pillar in the National Parks adventure ahead of us is our budget. I think it’s the most common question I’ve gotten when I tell people about our trip: how will you afford that? Cole and I are young — about to turn 26 this summer — but I like to think […]
In August 2015 we left our jobs and our home to go on a tour of all 59 National Parks across the US during the NPS Centennial year. We spent a year immersing ourselves for about 5 days in each park as we tent camped, hiked, biked, backpacked, kayaked, and climbed our way through the challenge and adventure of our lifetime.
We are Cole and Elizabeth, twenty-something Missourians turned National Parks explorers - constantly seeking to find new adventure and ourselves. Follow our journey for pictures, videos, park tips, and stories - because after all, the Parks are for sharing.
